We are open at the Akeley Building!

Dear Stowe Community,

We wanted to update you on the status of the library, our new temporary location, and possible timeline.

Here's the rundown:

On Monday, December 10th a sprinkler pipe broke in our attic space.  A piece of the pipe blew off and allowed water to stream out.  This went on for approximately 30 minutes before the fire department shut off the waterline to stop the flow.  During those minutes water rained down into the Helen Day Art Center's gallery ceiling, walls and floor then it continued it's path through the Library's ceiling, walls and floor to the basement.  The Library lost all the adult non-fiction, the adult fiction and our adult audio selection (audio books and great courses).  We are working on finding a purchasing plan for rebuilding the collections.  We were able to save the Biography collection, DVD collection, our Large Print and New Books walls were spared as well! We will be offering InterLibrary Loan requests for materials (timing TBD).

The building was also significantly damaged. The front section of the library and the staff office space are have been torn down to studs. We have a construction company lined up for the rebuild. The timing has been estimated to be Spring 2019 for the original library space to reopen.  We will have updates as the work progresses.

The support from you the community has been so overwhelmingly appreciated!! We have had a plentiful number of people ask how they can help- we are working to figure out our next steps and will reach out to the community when we have a game plan!

We are all set up in our new Temporary Location: The Akeley Building in the Memorial Hall room (where the select board used to meet!).  Our new hours are Monday - Friday 10-4 and Saturday's 10-2.  We have our phone forwarded - 802-253-6145 - if you have questions please give us a call or stop by our new space!  We are offering all our New Books, New DVDs and Newspapers/periodicals for our adult patrons. Public Access computers are available as well.  We also have a selection of Children's and Young adult items, including picture books, early readers, Dorothy Canfield Fisher books, GMBA books, YA and DVD's.
